Sofia’s Honey Bear Half Bee Day

May 18, 2020 Kylie Tuosto

Oh boy does time fly! Last weekend, Sofia turned 6 months old and even though we’re all sheltering in place, we got to have a little celebration for her. Read on for more details on her adorable little honey bear themed Half Bee Day celebration!

In case you’re like me and you just want to know where you can get all of these awesome party supplies, here’s the list of small shops who helped me make this event so cute.

  • Party Design by @goodnightfox

  • Balloons by @soireelove

  • Cake and desserts by @the.cake.shop

  • Cupcake toppers by @goodnightfox

  • Dress by @lizslittlebowtique / Fabric design by @goodnightfox

  • Crown by @pennyandgigi

  • Back drop by @goodnightfox

  • Soft block & bibs by @littlecozyfox

  • Bows by @turbansfortots

This half bee celebration was inspired by my daughter’s honey bear themed nursery. I figured I might as well get my use out of this adorable theme while she’s still young enough to enjoy it!

I started by gathering some inspiration for all of the party supplies and decor. You can check out my mood board below. Once I had collected everything I wanted, I narrowed down to just to essentials to pull off this awesome bee day look. I knew I wanted the main color palette to be soft yellows and white with just a splash of pink here and there.

The Cake

I knew I needed to get the dessert order in ASAP so I started by designing the cake. I decided on a dessert party before shelter in place was a thing so since we’d already order Ed the cake and wanted to support small shops, we did a little pivot and made party boxes to drop off at friends and family’s homes.

Anyway back to the cake! I designed this two tier cake to feature the honey bear and honey pot on top but also the adorable honey comb pattern that I planned to use as a backdrop. Then to add a splash of pink, I designed the solid base with little white hearts to tie it together. If you wanted to do the honey bear bee day theme for a boy, you could easily swap out the link for a soft blue or light green and voila! A huge thank you to @the.cake.shop for bringing my vision to life through this super adorable cake!

The Desserts

You can’t have a dessert party without a variety of desserts! I wanted to keep the overall palette primarily yellow and white so I opted for bee themed cupcake pops, honeycomb shaped royal icing cookies, honeycomb shaped macarons, and bee hive cupcakes. To top off the cupcakes, I designed my own cupcake toppers using my illustrations, cupcake sticks, ribbon and sticker decals.

The Invites

When the party was still going to be in person, I had designed these adorable bee themed party invitations. Once we switched the party to virtual, it was easy to convert these to digital invitations that I was able to send via text message to friends and family to join our video call.

The Decor

When I saw this honeycomb backdrop inspiration, I completely fell in love and I knew I had to incorporate them somehow. But I also knew I wanted to have a yellow balloon garland and I didn’t want the whole thing to be too yellow and overwhelming. After making this awesome balloon garland from @soireelove I started putting up the honeycomb working my way from the floor up. But it just wasn’t blending. That’s when my friend suggested making it look like the balloons were raining honeycomb and sure enough, it helped blend the yellows together without being too overwhelming. A quick pivot, and we had an awesome backdrop for our virtual party.

For the honeycomb, I design a few different hexagons shapes, grabbed some matching yellow papers, and used my Cricut Machine to die cut the shapes.

The Highchair

I went back and forth on taking the photos on the floor or in her high chair. Once the day arrived and she wasn’t completely sitting up on her own, I decided high chair was the way to go. I had made this adorable high chair banner using some ribbon and a banner I designed with illustrations from GoodnightFox. She looked so cute in her high chair with her little 1/2 birthday crown by @pennyandgigi.

There you have it! An adorable Bee-Day Party for my babe’s 6 month celebration. It wouldn’t have been possible without all of the amazing small shops who despite the COVID shelter in place, are finding ways to provide their services. Check them out and consider shopping small for your next video-celebration!
