This fireworks milk experiment is such a fun way to bring a little Fourth of July excitement into a simple preschool science activity.
Instead of waiting until dark or dealing with loud fireworks, kids can create their own colorful “explosions” right at the kitchen table using milk, food coloring, dish soap, and a cotton makeup remover pad.
For this version, we added alternating drops of red and blue food coloring around the outside edge of a round makeup remover pad, placed it in the center of the dish, and watched the colors burst outward once the dish soap touched the milk.
It feels magical, but it is also a wonderful hands-on way to introduce surface tension, molecules, color mixing, prediction, and observation.

Create the firework center
Add alternating drops of red and blue food coloring around the outside edge of a round cotton makeup remover pad.
Place it in the milk
Pour whole milk into a shallow dish, then carefully place the colorful cotton pad in the center of the milk.
Add dish soap
Dip a cotton swab into dish soap and touch it to the milk near the pad. Watch the red and blue colors burst outward like tiny fireworks.
Parent tip
For the biggest “firework” effect, place the red and blue food coloring around the outer edge of the cotton pad before setting it in the milk. The circular shape helps the colors explode outward beautifully.
Why does the fireworks milk experiment work?
Milk contains tiny fat molecules floating throughout the liquid. Dish soap is designed to break apart fats.
When the soap touches the milk, it starts pulling those fat molecules in different directions. The food coloring rides along with the moving milk, creating colorful bursts that look like fireworks.
The cotton makeup pad adds an extra visual effect because it holds the red and blue food coloring in a circle before the colors spread into the milk.
