Why we love this recipe

I have tried so many ice cream dough recipes, and a lot of them are either too sticky, too sugary, or too messy for real play.

This version is different. It uses cookie mix, cornstarch, melted coconut oil, and just enough water to bring everything together. The result is a soft, fluffy, scoopable dough that feels so much like ice cream but does not stick to your hands.

It also smells amazing because of the cookie mix, which makes it perfect for pretend ice cream shop play, mud kitchens, sensory bins, and summer-themed play trays.

Ingredients and supplies for making soft ice cream play dough for sensory play.

Why this recipe works so well

The cookie mix gives the dough a sweet bakery smell and a soft base. The cornstarch makes it fluffy and helps prevent stickiness. The coconut oil gives it that smooth, moldable texture that makes it easy to scoop, roll, and press into cones.

Unlike recipes made with icing and sugar, this dough does not feel sticky on your hands. It is soft enough for little hands to scoop but firm enough to hold its shape during pretend play.

Why we love this activity

This fireworks milk experiment is such a fun way to bring a little Fourth of July excitement into a simple preschool science activity.

Instead of waiting until dark or dealing with loud fireworks, kids can create their own colorful “explosions” right at the kitchen table using milk, food coloring, dish soap, and a cotton makeup remover pad.

For this version, we added alternating drops of red and blue food coloring around the outside edge of a round makeup remover pad, placed it in the center of the dish, and watched the colors burst outward once the dish soap touched the milk.

It feels magical, but it is also a wonderful hands-on way to introduce surface tension, molecules, color mixing, prediction, and observation.

Materials needed

  • Whole milk
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • Cotton swabs
  • Round cotton makeup remover pad
  • Shallow plate or dish
  • Paper towels for cleanup

Step 3

Add dish soap

Dip a cotton swab into dish soap and touch it to the milk near the pad. Watch the red and blue colors burst outward like tiny fireworks.

Parent tip

For the biggest “firework” effect, place the red and blue food coloring around the outer edge of the cotton pad before setting it in the milk. The circular shape helps the colors explode outward beautifully.

Why does the fireworks milk experiment work?

Milk contains tiny fat molecules floating throughout the liquid. Dish soap is designed to break apart fats.

When the soap touches the milk, it starts pulling those fat molecules in different directions. The food coloring rides along with the moving milk, creating colorful bursts that look like fireworks.

The cotton makeup pad adds an extra visual effect because it holds the red and blue food coloring in a circle before the colors spread into the milk.

Fireworks milk experiment FAQ

How do you make a fireworks milk experiment?

Pour whole milk into a shallow dish, add red and blue food coloring to a round cotton makeup remover pad, place the pad in the milk, then touch the milk with a cotton swab dipped in dish soap.

Why does dish soap make the colors explode?

Dish soap breaks apart the fat molecules in milk. As the molecules move, they carry the food coloring with them, creating colorful bursts across the surface.

Is this a good Fourth of July activity for preschoolers?

Yes. This is a simple patriotic STEM activity that gives kids a fireworks-inspired experience without loud noises or late nights.

What kind of milk works best?

Whole milk usually works best because it contains more fat, which creates a stronger reaction with the dish soap.

Can toddlers do this science experiment?

Yes, with adult supervision. This activity is best for children ages three and up because it involves food coloring and dish soap.

The Key to Building Children’s Math Skills is “Real Experience”! How to Deepen Learning Through Apps and Sensory Play

My child loses interest the moment I try to practice numbers. Even when they do worksheets, it feels like it’s going in one ear and out the other. Many parents feel exactly this way. The cause may be something called “learning without context.”

Why does real context help math stick?

[TRANSLATION: According to research by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), children develop a deeper understanding of math concepts when they solve problems within meaningful, real-life situations. For example, understanding “what is 6?” is far more deeply absorbed by a child’s brain through the experience of “placing one cookie on each of 6 plates” than by looking at an abstract number. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) also states that “before entering school, children naturally explore mathematics through play and daily activities.” In other words, math is not something to be “taught” — it is something to be woven into experience.]

Why pretend play is the best math classroom

Children’s beloved pretend play — playing shop, restaurant, hospital — is actually an ideal opportunity to learn math. Counting money at a shop. Sharing pizza equally with friends. Counting how many cups of lemonade were sold. Comparing the sizes of packages. Within this kind of play, math naturally functions as a “tool for solving problems.” Without any awareness of “studying math,” children absorb concepts like numbers, quantities, comparison, and fractions into their very bodies.

EXTEND THE LEARNING! APP × SENSORY PLAY × DRAMATIC PLAY

To deepen the learning from Bloomtown even further, we recommend bringing the app experience into “real play.” Research shows that repeatedly experiencing the same concept through different senses (visual, tactile, auditory) significantly increases retention in memory.

For example, after playing “Lemonade Stand” in the app, using GoodnightFox’s printable Lemonade Stand dramatic play set lets children run a real pretend shop. Making a menu, paying with coins, calculating change — the money concepts learned on screen are further reinforced through hands-on, physical play.

Similarly, after learning fractions in “Pizza Parlor,” dramatic play pizza printables let children physically feel what equal sharing means in real life. Adding pretend pizza toppings to a sensory bin and practicing dividing them equally is also a wonderful extension activity. 🍕

App → Printout → Sensory Play: these three steps together dramatically deepen a child’s understanding of math.
